To enrich our connectedness and foster a vibrant relationship among us, sisters in Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Philippines organized the first Christmas celebration as a Region via zoom, on Dec. 25, 2021.

The event took place simultaneously at different places and on different time zones.  The sisters from different communities exchanged short presentations like Christmas carols, a dance or drama, a chorus of greetings, or a video clip to greet each other and celebrate the spirit of Christmas in unity and simple joy. Despite our distance and amidst the pandemic, we found ways to be creative in fostering our relationship as a region.

Vietnam province initiated this celebration and hosted the event. There were so many sisters, young and energetic, old and creative, happy and excited in seeing each one’s tiny face on the screen of their gadget (television,  laptops or cellphones). Some in big groups, others in small groups and still others on their own.  It doesn’t matter, what counts is our togetherness.

The sisters heartily contributed and participated with creativity both young and old, sharing one another’s giftedness and uniqueness.  Since we were at the mercy of internet connection, distractions were unavoidable when the signal was unstable.  People suddenly froze, or the video stopped, got blurred or in slow motion, we’re cut off from zoom and then resumed. Whatever happened they were part of the celebration and our patience served well. Moreover, I believe it did not ruin the spirit of life and joy that hovered among us.  It was simple but fun and amusing. We exchanged not boxes of gifts but bonds of presence that drew us closer to one another through laughter and cheers, gratitude and prayers, spirit of unity and solidarity.

We remembered and offered prayers for the suffering victims of typhoon Rai. We praise and thank God for the beauty of our diversity and interculturality. The Incarnation of Christ is our inspiration as we move onward to becoming a region.  We open our minds, hearts and wills to allow the Spirit to lead us on this path of transformation.
